Rajju in Kerala Porutham: Five Sections and the Three-Finger Count
Rajju is one of the birth-star factors used in traditional Kerala horoscope matching. A star-pair comparison may show different Rajju groupings because more than one counting method is used. Our Porutham birth-star tool displays two named classifications separately so you can see which method produced each result.
The five-section classification
In the five-section table cited by V. Parameswaran and K. A. Velu, the 27 Nakshatras are assigned to Head, Neck, Stomach, Thigh or Feet. The tool looks up each selected star in that table and reports whether the two labels match. For example, its table places Ashwini in Feet and Ardra in Neck. A label is a statement about this table; it does not, by itself, establish the outcome of a relationship.
The Kerala three-finger count
The same published discussion describes another method used in parts of Kerala. Start at Ashwini on the first finger, then count Bharani on the middle finger and Krittika on the third. Reverse direction for Rohini on the third, Mrigashira on the middle and Ardra on the first; then continue the back-and-forth pattern. In a calculator the six-position sequence is first, middle, third, third, middle, first, repeated through all 27 birth stars.
This explains a useful example: Ashwini and Ardra occupy different sections in the paper’s five-section table, but both land on the first finger under the three-finger count. Ashwini and Rohini land on the first and third fingers respectively. The two methods answer different classification questions, so the tool identifies each one rather than combining them into a single score.

- Choose both verified stars in the Porutham tool and compare the two Rajju results.
- Read the named source and note which regional method is intended before interpreting a difference.
Birth time, historical UTC offset and exact coordinates matter to a calculated star near a transition. Our current chart engine uses a provisional Lahiri approximation, so independently check a boundary-sensitive result. This star-pair tool does not calculate two full charts, Papasamyam, Chovva or Dasa Sandhi, and it does not recommend or reject a marriage.
